What Is the Difference Between S7-1200 and S7-1200 G2?
The S7-1200 G2 uses a newer hardware platform with more memory and a dual-core processor architecture. Siemens also highlights enhanced motion control, NFC access for diagnostics, Web API support and a more compact design. The PLC footprint on the DIN rail is about 25% smaller than the previous S7-1200 generation.
Are S7-1200 and S7-1200 G2 Modules Compatible?
No. Siemens states that S7-1200 G2 is not hardware-compatible with previous S7-1200 modules. Existing signal modules, signal boards and other expansion hardware should not be assumed to work with a G2 CPU.
Before replacing an installed S7-1200, check the CPU model, digital and analog I/O, communication modules, safety functions and cabinet layout.
Can an S7-1200 Project Be Migrated to S7-1200 G2?
Yes, but it is not always a direct one-click replacement. Siemens provides an S7-1200 G2 Migration Tool and Migration Checker for supported projects. Migration requires TIA Portal V20 or later.
Some settings still need manual verification after migration. These can include PROFINET IP settings, hardware properties, HMI connections and certain technology objects. If the existing S7-1200 uses onboard analog I/O, the G2 configuration may require an additional signal board.
Which PLC Should You Choose?
For new machines, S7-1200 G2 is worth considering when you need a smaller control cabinet, higher performance, improved motion control or newer diagnostic functions.
For an existing S7-1200 system, first compare the installed hardware with available G2 equivalents before ordering. The G2 should not be treated as a simple drop-in replacement.
